2012 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year

Ron Kordes and Suzie Pignetti Named 2012 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2012) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Ron Kordes, head girls' volleyball coach at Assumption High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and Suzie Pignetti, head girls' volleyball coach at Charlotte Latin School in Charlotte, North Carolina, have been selected as the 2012 AVCA National High School Coaches of the Year.

‘What Suzie Pignetti and Ron Kordes have contributed to volleyball goes far beyond winning championships, although both of them have done plenty of that with 15 and 17 State titles between them," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "They have been change agents, shepherding the sport from one era to another, and always staying in touch and in tune with the young people in their gyms. They're amazing!"

Suzie Pignetti is a 35-year high school varsity coaching veteran, boasting a career record of 745-150. As the current head coach of Charlotte Latin School in North Carolina, her teams have won nine consecutive State Championships. She has been at her post with Charlotte Latin for the past 12 years, and has 15 total State Championships to her name.

Pignetti won her ninth Straight NCISAA 3A State Championship with the Charlotte Latin Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Despite her team being down 0-2 in the finals against conference rival Charlotte Country Day, she calmly coached her team back to a 3-2 win. In 2012, she skillfully steered her team through a season riddled with injuries, losing her libero to a broken leg midway through the season and losing a middle to a broken finger the week before the state tournament. Her last-minute roster adjustments included moving veteran players to new positions and building confidence in less-experienced players that were pressed into action. Her only loss this season was to #1 ranked South Carolina Hillcrest High School in an early season tournament final.

Pignetti followed up a 40-2 2011 season by posting a record of 38-1 record in the 2012 campaign. Several of her players will be moving on to play collegiate volleyball next season, and her ability to mold young players into top form is evident in her consistently high level of success.

Kordes and Pignetti were selected from an outstanding group of nominees, which included: Amy Fisher (Nevada), Becky O'Neal (Texas), Brian Rosen (North Carolina), David McGinnis (Tennessee) Deanna Meyer (Utah), El Mehdi Alaoui (Virginia), Jenny Gray (Tennessee), Kelly Drobeck (California), Kelvin Hasch (Maine), Kris Kern (Ohio), Pauline Thiros (Idaho), Rich Coleman (Ohio), Ryan Mitchell (Texas), Stefani Legall (Georgia), Ron Lehman (Ohio), Tom Stephenson (Virginia) and Zach Young (Missouri).

The AVCA will formally present the National High School Coach of the Year awards to Kordes and Pignetti at the 2012 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday, December 13. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention.

As a result of winning AVCA National Coach of the Year honors, Pignetti and Kordes will lead Team East and Team West in the fifth annual Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition, Friday, December 14th at the KFC YUM! Center. Tickets for the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition are on sale now throughTicketmaster.
